The initial proposals for the project identified a range of different
target groups and types of geographical location. The selection
of the eight groups we worked with was based on what would be achievable
with the resources in a somewhat limited timescale yet still achieve
as much diversity of involvement as possible. The schools selected
were:
Wymeswold County Primary School
A small village school in an affluent community based in the eastern
Wolds of the borough. The age-range was 7-8 years old. 25 pupils
were engaged in the project. The population is almost solely Anglo-European.
5 workshop sessions.
Shelthorpe Primary School
A large, estate-based school in the south west of Loughborough.
Approximately one-third of the children at this school have been
identified as having specific educational needs. Shelthorpe is on
the Central Government index of the 2000 most deprived wards in
Britain. The population of the area is largely Anglo-European. 25-30
pupils were engaged in the age-range 8-9 years old. 4 workshop sessions.
Cobden Primary School
A medium-sized urban school in the south east of Loughborough. The
school has a high percentage of children of South Asian heritage,
predominantly Bangladeshi. The Hastings Ward in which the school
is situated is also on the Government's 2000 list. The age-range
was 9-10 years. 25-30 children took part in the project. 4 workshop
sessions.
Rendell Primary School
A medium-sized urban school in the north east of Loughborough. The
school has a high percentage of children of South Asian heritage,
predominantly Gujarati. The Lemyngton Ward in which the school is
situated is also on the Government's 2000 list. The age-range was
7-8 years. 25-30 children took part in the project. 4 workshop sessions
.
Eastfield Primary School
A medium-sized school in the urban fringe area of Thurmaston. Thurmaston
is a reasonably affluent community of middle-income families with
small pockets of deprivation. There is a substantial South Asian
(mainly Gujarati) population to the south of the school and some
children from this area attend Eastfield. The age-range was 7-8
years old. 25-30 children took part in the project. 4 workshop sessions.
Hall Orchard Primary School
A medium-sized village school in the Central Soar Valley area of
Charnwood. Barrow is a relatively affluent/middle-income village
with small areas of local authority housing. The population is almost
solely Anglo-European. The age-range was 7-8 years old. 25-30 children
took part. The school also did considerable follow-up work to the
project. 4 workshop sessions.
Charnwood Museum, Loughborough Open Group
A shifting group of 8-10 children in the age-range 9 -11 years old.
This group met for two extra sessions making six in all. The project
drew children mainly from central and west Loughborough.
Birstall Library, Open Group
A group of eight 9-11 year olds all from Birstall and recruited
through Riverside Primary School.
The open groups were the only ones with Year 6 students present.
All schools were not prepared to release Year 6 pupils due to SATs
considerations. A further nine Year 6 children at Shelthorpe School
were interviewed during the course of the project and their concerns
and ideas are also contained within the report.
